自分の皮膚を守る

これは、他人の迷惑を顧みず、自分だけの安全・利益を守る、

保身に走る、自分だけ無事に逃れるという意味です。

保身に走る、自分の身の安全だけを守る、自分だけ助かろうとする 

このような意味です。

例えば、

He is just trying to save his own skin.

彼は自分の保身しか考えていない。

I think he's gonna save his own skin, so you should expect that.

彼は自分の身を守ると思うから、覚悟しておいた方がいい。

The government is trying to save its own skin rather than trying to help the victims of the disaster.

政府は被災者を助けることよりも、自らの保身に必死だ。

He threw his partner under the bus to save his own skin.

彼は自分だけ助かるために、パートナーを切り捨てた/裏切った。
