shoot the breeze 

これはアメリカでよく使われます。そよ風を撃つ、の表現です。4

特に目的もなく雑談する、おしゃべりをする、たわいない話をする、時間を潰す、

の意味です。

カウボーイが暇つぶしに空（風）に向かって銃を撃っていた、古い表現が

されています。 

例えば、

We just sat on the porch and shot the breeze for a couple of hours.

ベランダに座って、2時間ほど他愛もない話をしていた。 

I ran into an old friend, and we spent the afternoon shooting the breeze.

昔の友人に会って、午後はずっとおしゃべりをして過ごした。 

"So, what did you talk about with your client?"

"Oh, we just shot the breeze."

「それで、顧客と何を話したの？」 「いや、ただの世間話だよ。」） 

I like to shoot the breeze with my colleagues during coffee breaks.

コーヒーブレイクの時は同僚と雑談するのが好きだ。
