水を差す話

水を差すは、盛り上がっている雰囲気や計画に対して否定的な意見を言ったり、

冷めたい反応により意欲を削くことを意味します。

英語では、～に冷水を投げる、と表現します。

throw cold water on　～

例えば、

She threw cold water on the idea.

彼女はそのアイデアに水を差した。

That comment threw cold water on the whole conversation.

そのコメントは話全体に水を差した。

Right when I'm in the middle of planning an enjoyable trip,

don't throw cold water on everything by asking if I've studied

for the test.

楽しい旅行の計画の最中に試験勉強したかなんて聞いて水をささないで。
